I also think a good combat mindset is a great advantage. Don't quit, don't stop, keep fighting until all threats have been neutralized. A mouse with the right combat attitude and equipment can kick a lion's butt. Go at your aggressor like they're going to do unspeakable things to your loved ones if you don't put them down to stay. Get angry and meaner than hell, bite, kick, gouge, slap and stomp if you're forced into a fight. Failure is not an option.
